George's Memo

September Letter to the Residents
Nancy gave me some interesting news recently: it seems that Connie Forbes, who was editor of The Hacienda for 28 years, saves all the magazines. Last week Shauna Suarez and Sally Dierking put her collection into a 3-ring binder in the Library. All the magazines for three decades are now available for your perusal.

I've been doing these Memos for the last 6 years; if I'd known my past words might come back to haunt me I might have chosen those words more carefully! Diana Welsh in our office does her best to catch most of my errors before we go to print but even she can't get them all. I'll have to try a bit harder, now that I know my musings are being saved for posterity.

September in Hacienda

When those future generations read this issue of The Hacienda, they will be amazed at how fun and active our residents were way back in 2010. Just a few examples:

• Sept. 6--Labor Day--the Social Club is having their annual Chili Cook-Off. This is your chance to wrest the Crown away from Mike Bailey, last year's winner. To make it fair, the judging will be done by non-residents: Pamela Dickerson (the Arts & Crafts Teacher) and her boyfriend; and another couple that teaches the line dancing classes and a couple other very impartial judges.

• Assuming she survives the Chili judging, Pamela will start up the Arts/Crafts Classes again in September. Classes take place on Fridays @ 9 AM. If you've been wanting to learn crochet, knitting, needlepoint, etc., this is your chance.

• Sally Dierking has started a monthly Book Club, featuring books she picks up from the Morgan Hill Library.

• Sept. 14--another of the health presentations Nicki Ross has been arranging, this time about the evils of stress--you know, like when you've just heard that generations of future residents will re-read stuff you wrote decades ago--together with some strategies to combat these evils. In my case, that involves spell check and a glass of good red wine.

• Both the Ladies Guild and Hacienda Happy Helping Hands are having fund-raising sales, with the proceeds benefiting charities and the homeless shelter.

Thanks to all the volunteers involved in these and the other fun events that are a routine part of life in the Hacienda!

Where is Your Income Cert?

As I type this--on Aug. 6--we've received 121 Annual Income Certification Forms. That leaves 45 holdouts.

I know I don't have to remind you that every dollar Hacienda saves in property taxes is used for capital improvements, maintenance or for rental assistance, and that these are much better uses of your rent monies than sending those dollars to the Tax Assessor. I could also remind you that if you don't return the form, you risk losing your rent subsidy.

So won't you please take care of this simple task--take a moment, answer a few questions and return the form? If you misplaced yours, you can get another form from the Office.

Have a great Labor Day!
