George's Memo

September Letter to the Residents
Did you hear about the near-tragedy that almost happened last month? One of our younger Pillar Ridge residents was hit by a car in the main parking lot.

It was the youngster's fault. Apparently he shot out from the parking lot without any warning and without paying attention to potential traffic. The car that hit him had its bumper pulled off by his bike peddle as he slid to one side. No, he wasn't wearing a helmet but fortunately the only thing hurt was his pride.

This little boy is extremely lucky that this driver wasn't going very fast, unlike so many drivers in Pillar Ridge. Even so, there are several obvious messages here:

• Neither this young boy nor any of his 5 friends that were riding with him were wearing helmets. This isn't just against the law--it isn't very smart. How do you think the parents of this child would feel if their boy had suffered head trauma?

• Thank goodness this driver was alert, careful and driving at a safe speed. Would you like to be a driver that cost a child his life due to a moment of carelessness?

• It isn't always the driver's fault. As parents, perhaps you should take a little time with your kids, use this as a teachable and make clear the need for safety, helmets and the old reminder about looking both ways.

After all, you wouldn't want your child to miss the big Back-to-School Party because of a bike accident, would you?

Speaking of which...I'm pleased to acknowledge the work of Lenore, Nicki Ross and those of you who helped make the Back-to-School Party a success once again. Your children thank you for helping them have such a good time--food, games, school supplies for every kid, a raffle for new backpacks...

As always, this Party was sponsored by SPARC, our resident services entity. None of your rent dollars was used for this event.

Sheriff Activities League Grant

We were excited to learn that the Sheriff Activities League ("SAL") received a grant to bring some supervised children's activities to Pillar Ridge. How fun will this be!

The plan is to start an after-school program in September. We might also have a mobile recreation van available once or twice each week, although that hasn't been confirmed yet. Paul is going to put together a computer station for your children's use; the SAL will provide the materials, computers and even supervision. Nice work, Paul!

Have a great Labor Day!
